EarthArts

My artwork consists mostly of found materials and their creation in or with nature.  They are nature-based, intuitive, ritual artworks assisting our bond with the earth and explore the unified archetype of Trickster-Shaman.  Processes include, but are not limited to, photography, beadwork, driftwood, encaustics, murals, tilework, leatherwork, and the creation of ritual-transitional objects.
With a 25-year art-teaching history, I have taught many diverse ages and populations from children in East Harlem, New York; high school students at Mission College Preparatory in San Luis Obispo, California; college students at Cuesta and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo; and, private workshop intensives at my home studio to high school students and women’s groups in Los Osos, California.  My teaching, no matter the age of the students, consistently reflects the origin of the word “teach”, which means, “to draw forth”.  I draw forth that which is creatively unique within each individual.
My photographic portraiture services capture not only the individual or group but also their relationship with their natural environment.
Please contact me to discuss commissions, tutorials/workshops, and portraits.

Testimonials:

“Absolute magnificence.  Beyond words.  I’ve never been this affected by a person’s work – and remember, I live less than an hour from the greatest museums in the world.”   - Dave W., Naturalist & Educator

“Mary wishes to express her innate sense of what is right; beyond obviously being intelligent, creative, aesthetically sensitive, is in a wonderful way totally honest and pure in her wish to make meaningful imagery; has a desire to stimulate and serve the energetic and intelligent enhancement of others; is grounded and very practical about how she lives her life; and, senses there is a commodification of art that can be culturally toxic – that the role of art and the artist is in flux and can be redefined.”  - David H., Artist & Educator

Ritual-Transitional Object Testamonial:

“Raspirit:  During an experience of deep crisis, a wounded crow entered my life – and I became a ‘Crow-Mama’ for several months, a most magical experience.  Because she came with the sunniest spring, summer, and fall, in memory, I called her Ra.  When she one day disappeared/left, I experienced a grief I had never known before; My soul was in despair.  Ra became Raspirit - and Mary’s Medicine was a beautiful leather hand-sewn pouch filled with feathers I had received and collected from Ra.  The feathers were flown halfway around the world – from Norway to California – and as Medicine we traced its journey across the planet back again.  Carrying this Medicine around my neck and close to my heart for weeks – and months – helped me focus on what RaSpirit’s gift was all about:  The gift of magic; I learned to fly.  View the video
I received the biggest and best surprise of my life:  I met my Love – and my life changed completely.  I will always thank Mary for her Medicine.”  - Tone, Artist and Educator
